How to Choose a Power Station for a Home Power Outage

A useful outage power plan starts by deciding which loads are essential, then matching their watts, surge needs and desired runtime to a power station.

List essential loads

Start with the refrigerator, lights, communications and other equipment you truly need. Add their expected simultaneous wattage rather than trying to power the entire house by default.

Separate power from energy

AC output determines what the station can run at once. Battery watt-hours determine roughly how long those loads can run. Both numbers matter.

Plan for recharging

Consider wall charging, vehicle charging and compatible solar input. Solar performance varies with weather and panel conditions, so it should not be treated as guaranteed daily energy.

Try the runtime calculator

Enter battery capacity and average device load. This planning estimate uses 85% usable efficiency.

Estimated runtime: 17.0 hours

Actual runtime varies with conversion losses, cycling loads, temperature and battery condition.
